Pica Pica. CD - Atavistic ALP 258CD. Overview . This chapter in Atavistic's Unheard Music Series is the CD issue of a 1982 album by saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff, and drummer Günter Baby Sommer. There is an interesting contrast of styles here, given the formalist tradition Mangelsdorff came from and the staunch vanguardism of Brötzmann and Sommer. Of course, this is a blowing session that took place at a German Jazzfest and those contrasts work here to the betterment of the music. As Brötzmann blows his guts out, he gets reined in over and again by the repetitive phrases, short lines and fills. Pica, Pica. Versões 2. Peter Brötzmann Sextet, Peter Brötzmann Quartet. FMP 130. Mangelsdorff offers contrast with staccato fills, sometimes offering the semblance of a lilting melody. The tune is a study in contrasting approaches-the ecstatic blowing of Brötzmann versus the smooth restraint of Mangelsdorff. Its an uneven affair to start, with Brötzmann drowning out his bandmate, but eventually a detente is achieved. The moments when these two finally harmonize are genuinely elevating-it sounds like a conversation between peers. Pica Pica is an all-star affair featuring the trio of Peter Brötzmann reeds, Albert Mangelsdorff trombone and Gunter Sommer drums, originally recorded in 1982 at Jazzfest Unna in Germany. Dug out of the FMP archives for Atavistic's Unheard Music Series, Pica Pica is now available here in the States. The pairing of Mangelsdorff, an innovator on trombone through his use of polyphonics, with the gut busting, reed-biting tenor of Brötzmann is intriguing to say the least. Not to say that Brötzmann is any less technically sound.
